Democratic Principles

Statement of Democratic Principles

The programs of, and teaching in our school supports and promotes the principles and practices of Australian democracy, including a commitment that:

  • We believe in an accountable, democratically elected government.

  • We respect and observe the rule of law, and believe that no person is above the law.

  • We believe in equal rights for all before the law, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, gender or other attributes.

  • We believe not only in the freedom of religion, but also the need to practise tolerance and understanding of others' beliefs.

  • We believe in the value of freedom of speech and freedom of association, but also acknowledge that we have the responsibility not to abuse this freedom.

  • We believe in the values of openness and tolerance, and value and respect all members of the School community regardless of background.

At St Mel's Education Community:

  • Our Identity Statement articulates important values for Catholic Education at St Mel's Catholic Primary School.

  • Our Curriculum Scope and Sequence outlines the importance of Civics and Citizenship within the curriculum.

  • Source of Life and the Victorian Curriculum form the base for our schools curriculum.

  • Our through lines encompass a study of democratic principles through Personalised Learning.

  • Our Senior Student Leadership team respectfully raises and lowers the Australian and Aboriginal flags each school day.

  • Catholic Values and Values for Australian Schools are displayed in the Administration Area.

  • The National Anthem is led by the students at weekly assemblies.
